Slow down and move over

NOUVELLE EDITORIAL

It’s something that shouldn’t have to be repeated, and yet, here we are.

When you see flashing lights on the side of the road, regardless of their colour or meaning, slow down and move over.

Late last week, someone was killed as a result of a collision on the QEII Hwy. after a semi-trailer collided with the back of a tow truck stopped on the side of the highway.

The driver of the tow truck wasn’t in his vehicle at the time, but the 62-year-old driver of the semi-trailer was unable to escape his vehicle, which had caught fire.

This isn’t the first, and it’s probably not the last, time someone has died as a result of people not slowing down when they see flashing lights.

In fact, police officers assisting vehicles on the side of the road, whether it’s changing a tire or a traffic stop, have either been killed or nearly died as a result of someone else’s negligence.

When you see lights flashing, it means the likelihood of someone being out of their vehicle either loading up a broken down car or issuing a traffic violation are fairly high.

The person on the side of the road is just doing their job, they have every intention of going home at the end of the day.

This is just one reason why it’s so important to keep your eyes on the road. Remove all distractions, including cell phones, so you don’t miss those flashing lights.

Because regardless of whether they’re yellow, blue and red, or red and white, the life of the person that turned them on matters.
