Summer is a special time here in the Lakeland, with exciting events almost every weekend for families and friends to check out.
Over the August long weekend, the classic Haying in the 30s fundraiser was again a hit with thousands visiting from near and far away. The event, which brings participants back to authentic farming practices of decades past, raises money to provide all kinds of support and relief to those individuals and families in the Lakeland battling cancer.
If horses and livestock are still your thing, but with a little more action added in, then the place to be last month was the Bonnyville Pro Rodeo and Chuckwagon Championships, which saw the events combined for the first time to create an entire weekend of hardcore cowboys, fearless drivers and outriders and bucking beasts entertaining huge crowds.
And if you missed the Bonnyville Rodeo, there's still a chance to catch the St. Paul Rodeo, with the finals set for Aug. 28 to Aug. 31 and are held at the Clancy Richard Arena.
This past weekend, the Glendon Derby and Mud- bogs made a mess of things, getting the crowds into a frenzy, as dirt was flying and cars were smashing.
Next weekend, the Ardmore Extreme will take its annual turn at disturbing the peace, as derby cars, monster trucks, souped-up lawnmowers, fireworks and hundreds of fans fill the motorsports track just east of Ardmore.
And if you're just looking for a slightly more peaceful scene there are plenty of provincial parks and recreation spots to take the family or friends and spend a day or two amongst some of Alberta's still-natural and beautiful areas.
