Sports writer looks for leads

Hello, my name is Trevor Robb. I am a 25-year-old sports reporter and photographer, and I am extremely excited to begin my tenure as the new sports reporter for the St. Paul Journal.

Hello, my name is Trevor Robb. I am a 25-year-old sports reporter and photographer, and I am extremely excited to begin my tenure as the new sports reporter for the St. Paul Journal.

In terms of sports knowledge I could be considered a jack of all trades. My primary sport is hockey. It doesn’t matter what level it’s played at, if it’s on I’ll watch it and if it’s being played nearby, I will cover it.

I recently covered the Grant MacEwan Griffins mens hockey team this past season and had the pleasure of watching Canadian Womens hockey Olympic gold medalist Shannon Szabados play between the pipes for the Griffins. The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) offers an elite brand of hockey that resembles the Alberta Junior Hockey League in terms of competitiveness and skill. It was an amazing learning experience not only as a writer but as a photographer because the players are so fast that if you blink at the wrong moment, you just might miss the shot.

After the hockey season finished I moved on to covering basketball. I covered the remaining ACAC playoffs for the MacEwan Griffins and the NAIT Ooks, as well as high school basketball, namely at St. Francis Xavier High School and Ross Sheppard High School in west Edmonton.

I have also covered mixed martial arts, wheelchair curling, and I recently had the opportunity to cover the first ever Canadian Yukigassen National Championships at Fort Edmonton Park. For those who do not know about Yukigassen, it is essentially one giant competitive snowball match. Winners either eliminate the opposing team by hitting them with snowballs or they have the chance to rush their opponents in an attempt to capture the flag standing on either end of the court. The winning team was from Saskatchewan and will compete in the World Yukigassen Championships in Japan in February, 2012.

These experiences, coupled with my extensive knowledge in football, baseball and soccer, have all contributed to my journalistic style and approach. But I need your help. As a new member of the St. Paul Journal team and a new member of the community, I don’t know the everyday happenings of the local sports market. If you are involved with any sports teams or leagues, or if you know of any upcoming events or have any story ideas yourself, feel free to shoot me an email at [email protected]. I look forward to meeting those involved in the sports world here in St. Paul.
