Summer fun at any age

This week I’m supposed to be on holidays, although, as of Monday morning, I am unsure whether or not that will actually happen. The summer months are typically the busiest months for me when it comes to work.

This week I’m supposed to be on holidays, although, as of Monday morning, I am unsure whether or not that will actually happen.

The summer months are typically the busiest months for me when it comes to work. My weekends are often filled with weddings, many evenings are filled with photo sessions, and the days are filled with work at the Journal, along with trying to get my two sons involved in some summer activities.

Although we were scheduled to leave for Calgary early this week, that trip has been put on hold (indefinitely at this point) and I am working on figuring out some other type of other mini summer getaway. Thankfully, being just a couple hours away from Edmonton, I think I’ve found a plan that will make everyone happy, and save us some money.

Although I do often find myself missing the city life, I am incredibly thankful to live where I do. Just this past weekend, with my husband being on the injured list, and being busy myself with work, there was no issue in finding childcare for our boys.

Without any hesitation, grandma and grandpa were happy to take them for the weekend, and Brodie and Gavin were even happier to spend the weekend with some of their favourite people.

When Sunday afternoon came around and my husband and I went to pick up our boys, there was certainly some convincing to be done, as neither really appeared to want to come home, despite being horrendously tired. Although it’s a little sad when your own kids don’t want to come home, I am incredibly grateful that my children have two sets of grandparents who are pretty much always on call, ready to come over or take over at a moments notice.

Given our often-unpredictable lives and schedules, being surrounded by family has been a blessing in so many ways. Every time I find myself missing life in the city, I am quickly reminded that life would not be near as convenient as it is here, never mind the priceless relationships that my sons have with each of their grandparents and uncles who also live nearby.

Although I might still yearn for a nice summer holiday, I know my boys are more than happy with the 20 minute drive it takes to get to grandma and grandpas house, or the two-minute walk to Granny and Papa’s.

One thing (of many) that my two-year-old and six-year-old have taught me is that expensive holidays and long drives aren’t needed for a summer of fun and memories, regardless of age.
