This past Saturday, the Lakeland Industry and Community Association (LICA) held a free birthday party, complete with nature activities, pizza and cupcakes, all in celebration of Earth Day – a day meant to remind us to learn about and take care of the planet we live on.
With Earth Day coming up on April 22, this was the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in the nature and wildlife that makes up this part of the world to take a hands on approach to learning. There were mounted birds of prey, small and large mammal pelts and skulls and different racks and antlers on display, as well as a 3-D watershed model, and animal and bird call identification games. There was also a presentation and discussion on protecting the environment at the event, which was open to anyone and all free.
At times, there can be a sense of pessimism when it comes to things to do in Bonnyville, but this past weekend was a great example of a group coming together to put on a fun and interesting event that allows people of all ages and backgrounds to learn about, enjoy and take pride in the place they live.
But in order for these and other events to continue and thrive people need to participate, which can be as easy as volunteering with the group or at the event, or just showing up and having a good time.
