To the Editor:

On July 14 of this year, our family received the kind of news that everyone wants to avoid, and it involved the dreaded word "cancer." My wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor which, when removed, was found to be cancerous. Instantly, life as we once knew it was changed forever. Anyone who has experienced this knows the routine that follows: weeks of intense treatments that involve radiation and/or chemotherapy that hopefully will make a difference.

Anyway, the purpose of my letter is not to deal in depth with this difficult "cross" to bear, but rather to focus on the indescribable value of all the support that comes your way during difficult times like this. The care shown by so many people along this journey of ours has helped immensely and one organization that I want to recognize for this is the Haying In The 30’s Cancer Support Society, which originates from Mallaig.

Their purpose is to raise funds to help families defray extra costs associated with living away from home while receiving cancer treatment. The method by which they do this is very unique and one can learn more about them by going onto their website www.hayinginthe30s.org. Since my wife and I are from Grande Prairie and have to live away from home for eight weeks in Edmonton, a family member of ours in St. Paul decided to submit our name to this Society to see if they could help out. In just a few weeks time, we received a generous contribution from them in the mail. We want to express our sincere gratitude to all those people who are part of this cancer support society for your time and effort in helping others. We are most appreciative.

Sincerely,

Ken and Louanne Pratch

Grande Prairie
