There’s a time and a place for everything.
When it comes to alcohol, for me, that’s not at a family event.
Go ahead, roll your eyes, but at least hear me out.
Meagan MacEachern The MacEachern Mindset
Recently, the City of Edmonton decided to forget about beer gardens and designated drinking areas at family-friendly festivities including Taste of Edmonton and K-Days, and instead, have opted to allow event goers to consume where they may.
While K-Days has restricted some areas, the Taste of Edmonton is completely open for alcohol consumption.
This had me thinking, while I can understand the draw for alcohol at an event such as the Taste of Edmonton, why the need for it at K-Days?
It’s a family-based festival. You should be able to go enjoy an afternoon without consuming alcohol.
It makes sense in the evening, sure. But is it really necessary to sit around the picnic table with your kids for lunch tossing back a cold one?
To me, it just doesn’t sit right.
Why do we feel the need to include alcohol in our everyday lives?
Would we really miss it that much if it just simply wasn’t there?
I don’t think you would.
I know for some events, the bar acts as a source of revenue, but in other situations, it’s just there to be there.
I think what we need to do is take a step back and reconsider our priorities if our first thought when planning an afternoon out with the family is “I wonder if there’s going to be a beer garden?”
