Don't like perogies? Have something against rodeo? Don't know a graduate? Have no fear, this weekend, there's a festival for those of us who need a generic festival, one that doesn't celebrate calorie-laden food, western culture, or the academic achievements of a select few.
On Canada Day, there is something for everyone, a day to come together to celebrate this fabulous country on its 145th birthday. Even non-Canadians can surely find something to celebrate on Canada Day.
And for those who do enjoy perogies, don't worry! The annual Pyrogy Festival kicks off the Canada Day festivities on June 30. So head on out to Glendon Saturday afternoon for a fun day of dancing, music, and consuming enough calories to see you through the rest of the weekend. The home of the World's Largest Pyrogy is offering a special treat this year, kicking off the Canada Day fun with fireworks Saturday night.
Then, Sunday morning in the Town of Bonnyville, the fun lasts all day long, starting off bright and early with a pancake breakfast from 7 – 11 a.m. at Sobeys. Didn't get enough pancakes? Don't worry, the calorie consuming lives on at a barbecue at the museum that runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with opening ceremonies at the museum at 1 p.m. Fill up on barbecued delights before heading on over to the parade down main street at 2 p.m. Lots of free candy for everyone!
The Party in the Park kicks off on the shores of Jessie Lake at 4 p.m. First up, The Ambers, an acoustic harmony group, take the stage, ending their show at 5 p.m. for Lakeland's Got Talent, which runs until 7:15 p.m.
By now, you'll probably be feeling a bit peckish. Don't worry, the Bonnyville Community Church is sponsoring a free barbecue at the park from 5 until 7:30 p.m.
From 7:45 until 8:45 p.m. pop rock group Self Evolution will be on stage, with Dryland Band, a folk act, following. They'll wrap up their set at 10 p.m. and then at 10:15 p.m., it's headliner The Clayton Bellamy Band taking the stage. The show is scheduled to end at 11:15 p.m. with fireworks at dusk.
Party in the Park not your thing? The Moose Lake Water Shed Society is hosting their 2nd annual Moose Lake Regatta. The event starts at 8:30 p.m. and organizers are asking participants to have their boat in the water by then. They'll be swinging by to pick up participating boats or residents can join the parade as they pass by. The event ends with a fireworks finale at the MD of Bonnyville Beach Park at sundown.
With options like these, it shouldn't be too difficult to find something fun to do this Canada Day!
Here at the Nouvelle, we intend to take in as many events, pancake breakfasts, and barbecues as our stomachs can handle. With that in mind, and because of the long weekend, we have an early press deadline, so our Canada Day coverage won't hit the pages until Tuesday, July 10.
Happy birthday, Canada!
