Thousands of dollars, countless hours

Another August long weekend has come and gone, and the small community of Mallaig is again quiet, after welcoming thousands of guests to the annual Haying in the 30’s site.

Another August long weekend has come and gone, and the small community of Mallaig is again quiet, after welcoming thousands of guests to the annual Haying in the 30’s site.

For the past 15 years, the event, and society in general, has grown exponentially. Although the number of dollars raised each year no longer doubles, it has grown enough that even a slight increase translates to $16,000.

The number of volunteers, hours, and the amount of food and other products given to the cancer support society is astounding. Individuals and businesses alike see many now share in the vision that was started by one man in 1999.

One of the reasons organizers believe the society continues to be such a huge success is also because of these volunteers and donors. None of the funds raised are directed to administration costs. Although businesses know their donations are appreciated, they are not given any special advertising bonuses on site, and that seems to be just fine.

Cancer is a disease that touches each one of us, in different ways. Watching someone battle the deadly disease is tough, and having an organization that works to support patients in need has become crucial for many.

Although the biggest fundraiser weekend for Haying in the 30’s is now over, that doesn’t mean the work and tireless efforts of those involved come to an end. The organization continues to accept donations throughout the year, and plans to ensure next year’s event continues are surely already taking place.
