Three leaders: three views

With the intent of asking questions of interest to our readers, a few 'fishing' questions were thrown into the mix. Seldom is the spotlight ever cast upon those in the media, and that's what I was interested in - just what the politicians, those who are typically under microscopic examination, think of the media in the region and its coverage of regional issues.

So casting a line into unknown waters, I was somewhat surprised, perhaps relieved, when the Pandora's box was opened, to find no overly harsh rebuttals or unreasonable commentary on local media coverage.

Mr. Isley raised probably the most apt observation, that is, Newcap's favouring of the Lloydminster Bobcats over the Pontiacs, and the lack of Pontiacs TV coverage.

Mr. Rondeau also made an interesting point by saying: "There's always room for improvement. If you stand still, then you're going backwards." I think it's a fair observation, even relating to any job, and perhaps something media folks would agree with. Media (including print, radio, Internet, and television) can and should strive to do better - although - one's definition of "improvement" is perhaps linked like rebar in a concrete structure to one's standing on specific issues.

When asked if he thought media latches onto (or exploits) certain incidences or minor events, Mr. Copeland commented that coverage from local media has been good: "In terms of how people behave, the media is going to report it. So I think people just need to respect everybody's views," he said. He's right. Media will report what politicians' do or say because they are entrusted to make proper decisions with public money.

But that doesn't mean media should be insolvent or inept. Mistakes should be corrected promptly, and differing views respected. Feel free to send me your two cents. Write to: [email protected].
