With the snow having finally disappeared we are now presented with some of the worst garbage I have ever seen along our local roads and especially the highways. It is no coincidence that if you are travelling east or north out of Bonnyville along any of the numbered highways, you are faced with atrocious and ridiculous amounts of garbage strewn all over the place.
As you travel west and south the situation is not near as bad, and gets substantially better the further out in those directions you go. The difference being, probably 95 per cent of the oil activity is either north or east of Bonnyville.
Sad to say, but true.
Highway 659 heading east out of town is probably the biggest embarrassment of the lot. In my whole life of living here, I have never seen this stretch of road as bad as this spring. When people out visiting start telling you how terrible your area looks because of it, it is past time of just shrugging it off as progress.
We have enough other challenges on our plates with the increase in activity, let us at least try and keep our area clean.
I have a challenge for our MD and Carillion…
Please hire a crew or crews, or summer students, whatever, to start cleaning up this mess. Trust me, there is work for all summer just trying to stay on top of what is there.
We have got to start staying on top of it now, because those who are creating the mess are not about to stop. This would not be a huge funding issue, far less than a lot of other requests out there. And it is roads that are travelled and used by a lot of people.
