It's just another day

I’ve noticed a great divide when it comes to the topic of Valentine’s Day, of people who celebrate and those that don’t.

I don’t really even consider it a holiday because you still have to work, go to school, and go about the day like any other normal one.

It’s more of a theme as a means of selling products with hearts on them, or to encourage people to buy flowers (specifically roses) as a form of love.

I found out a very long time ago that I’m not a romantic person, and this tends to come out around Valentine’s Day. I agree that if someone truly loves you, they shouldn’t have to remind you because a day on the calendar tells them to.

I think you should tell someone when you want to that you love them, and celebrate this whenever you want to - on your anniversary, each other’s birthdays, or literally any other day of the year.

My birthday also happens to fall very close to Valentine’s Day, and I often receive gifts that were bought on clearance due to this. While I was grateful for the present, it did bother me slightly when I received one with ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ written across it.

When I’m in a relationship, I usually veto a celebration for it. I don’t see it as very fair that someone has to get me multiple gifts so close together, which prompts me to ask that we just celebrate my birthday instead.

I see Valentine’s Day as very similar to Halloween, meaning that it lost it’s appeal after a certain point. For Halloween, this happened when it stopped being socially acceptable for me to go out and get free candy. For Valentine’s Day, that came when I stopped having to buy cards for all my classmates.

While I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day, it’s nice to see the social media posts of my friends and family celebrating. (I also enjoy it when they post photos other days of the year, there’s just a plethora of them on Feb. 14.) I scroll through them while I eat leftover cake from my birthday, and cheer them on from afar. What I really look forward to is the half price candy available afterwards, which normally lasts me quite a while.

If you choose to celebrate or just treat it like another day, make sure that it’s your choice to do so and not because the calendar told you to.
