Volunteers, the toast of the summer

The summer lineup of activities is set to turn up the sizzling heat in the Lakeland, with a few events successfully tucked under organizers’ belts.

The summer lineup of activities is set to turn up the sizzling heat in the Lakeland, with a few events successfully tucked under organizers’ belts.

Just a short week into July, there have already been Canada Day festivities throughout the area, Stoney Lake Stampede and Goodfish Lake’s annual treaty days celebration, all bringing out masses of individuals and families to enjoy food, drink and entertainment. Still to come this summer are various village fairs, Glendon’s derby daze, car shows and the LRA Finals, just to name a few.

Rural areas may not have the same year-round attractions as big cities such as Edmonton or Calgary, which may lead some to dismiss these small towns and villages as having “nothing to do.”

But such a dismissal couldn’t be further from the truth, because rural Alberta has a secret weapon - the invaluable efforts of an army of volunteers dedicated to making their communities better places to live, from the people in agricultural societies who stage events to those in Champions for Change, which is now working to beautify St. Paul with an ambitious, new street art project.

Newcomers to the area who join such groups and sign up to volunteer will find that there’s lots to do in the Lakeland, and even more to enjoy.
