We are women, hear us roar

The Henry Hype

The Cold Lake Women of Influence nominees were released earlier this month and it’s something that I always look forward to.

It’s an event that puts the focus on local ladies and everything that they do for the community. I love it, and I really think more communities need a night like this.

The world can’t work without women, and their actions are often overlooked.

They’re the ones working late after everyone’s gone home to make sure the event goes off without a hitch, or the fitness instructor at the front of the room helping you reach your goals, or the hardworking businesswoman representing their clients, or the volunteer just wanting to bring a smile to someone’s face.

They’re not looking for the recognition; they’re just doing what they’re passionate about. They make the City of Cold Lake and many other areas the places they are today, and encourage growth everywhere they go. The fact that many shy away from praise for their actions is exactly why I think these events should happen and why they’re so important.

The sheer shock and appreciation I hear from those nominated is refreshing and it never gets old. They never realized the influence they have over  people they interact with, or the positive impact they’ve made on someone’s life.

The Women of Influence Awards are just a small nod to those who help behind the scenes, and even if they don’t win, the ladies still get an evening out to enjoy. They hear the stories from the keynote speakers and wait in anticipation to learn who was chosen out of the names put forward.

I also love that the event is planned around International Women’s Day, because it’s exactly what that day is all about. It’s to put the spotlight on the courageous, hardworking, brave, and strong ladies that make the rest of us who we are.

If I didn’t have a mother who taught me that I could be anything I wanted to be, I never would have moved to Bonnyville to work for the Nouvelle. I did it because a woman who loved me reminded me everyday that I can be bold and that I don’t have to apologize for being myself.

I can never thank her enough for what she did for me, but events like this give local people the chance to do so for those who have positively influenced them.

This Henry Hype is dedicated to all the nominees, and I hope you all enjoy the evening celebrating everything that you do.
