This summer, as you make your list of must-see locations, be sure to include the Lac La Biche Museum. In operation since 2014, this museum is an accredited Alberta Museums Association partner and a showcase of the area’s heritage, culture and traditions.
“The Lac La Biche Museum features numerous exhibits where visitors can explore Lac La Biche’s natural, historical and cultural history,” says Jennifer Mueller, Manager and Director. “In addition to permanent exhibits, the museum hosts approximately 20 temporary exhibits throughout the year so there is always something new to see.”
“Some of the reasons why people love our museum,” she continues, “are our beautiful displays, interesting artifacts and friendly staff. Our museum does not have a set admission fee; it is admission by donation, making it affordable for all visitors. Be sure to ask for a scavenger hunt for the kids when you visit!”
The pandemic affected the museum by closing it for months at a time. Now, the staff is happy to be back to normal hours year-round and to offer both on-site and online programming.

Mueller notes, “Museums are important to Lac La Biche County because not only do they preserve artifacts for future generations, they also provide an opportunity to tell our region's story. The story of Lac La Biche has been shaped by many factors including Indigenous peoples, the fur trade, the railway, its multicultural heritage and the lives and contributions of residents. It's a fascinating story and we are happy to share it with residents and visitors in our region.”
She adds, “In addition to telling our region's story, museums are important to the community because they provide a variety of services such as hosting community events and providing programming. The Lac La Biche Museum offers a variety of children's and seniors' programming with the goal of offering educational opportunities in addition to enriching the lives of residents.”
It takes many committed individuals and teams to run a successful museum. Mueller says, “I would like to thank our board of directors, former board directors and all of our volunteers. Their dedication and countless volunteer hours have helped to keep the museum’s doors open as well as providing the necessary vision and support in the museum’s development over the years.”
“I would also like to thank Lac La Biche County for its ongoing support, which has given the museum the stability needed to grow and thrive. As the Museum Manager, I would also like to thank my staff. Their dedication and hard work have allowed the Lac La Biche Museum to expand its services and programs significantly over the last several years.”
“I extend a special thank you to all our community partners who have assisted staff in the development and implementation of engaging exhibits and programs. Lastly, I would like to thank all our donors and sponsors. Without artifact donations as well as those who provided funding for museum operations and programming, the Lac La Biche Museum would not be able to showcase the amazing history and cultural heritage of the region.”
The Lac La Biche Museum is proud of the hospitality and tourism award it won last year. As a popular category in the division, the Museum was thrilled to be both nominated and selected in recognition of its many contributions to the community and tourism industry.
