HEB students help create change locally and abroad

H.E. Bourgoin’s leadership group CHANGE (Children Helping All Nationalities Grow Equally) gather for a group photo with bags they’ve filled with pennies they’ve collected over the past month for the We Create Change penny drive, which provides clean drinking water to one person in need for every bag of 2,500 pennies collected.

A group of ambitious H.E. Bourgoin students have been working hard to create positive changes in the world.

The school's leadership group CHANGE (Children Helping All Nationalities Grow Equally), made up of 22 students, recently joined Free The Children's We Create Change campaign, and throughout November had been collecting pennies for the campaign.

“This is one of Canada's largest penny drives,” said teacher Vonda Worthman. “It's coinciding with the penny going out of circulation. We are challenging students to donate their pennies to an important cause – water.”

The campaign's goal is to have students fill bags with pennies, and each bag of 2,500 pennies will go towards providing clean water to one person in need.

“Students have been working hard to fill the penny bags. This campaign shows that even pennies can create change.”

Worthman said she is proud of the leadership group for all their hard work.

From Dec. 3-14, H.E Bourgoin students are giving back to the community by taking part in a food drive to support the local food bank.

“Students are working really hard on their ‘We Can' food drive. This month we are focusing our initiatives locally, whereby students give back to their own community,” said Worthman.

The students will also be helping the Knights of Columbus in Bonnyville with sorting the donated food into hampers to be handed out to those in need.
