Woman pleads guilty to theft

Understanding Canada’s criminal justice system can be complicated.

Possession of an illegal substance and stolen items landed a woman with a 30-day sentence.

On July 24, Keesha Pipe entered a guilty plea to charges against her in Bonnyville court via CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre.

Pipe was charged with possession of an illegal substance, failure to appear, and possession of stolen items over $5,000.

She received a sentence of 30 days, and was credited time served for 20 days.

In January, Pipe was originally arrested and charged with stolen property over $5,000. She failed to report to a probation officer within two days of release as required.

On May 20, Bonnyville RCMP were notified that Pipe was located at a Bonnyville hotel, and arrested her on an outstanding warrant.

The arresting officer found a small amount of methamphetamine on her. She was subsequently charged with possession of an illegal substance.

Crown prosecutor Terry Mazerolle saw Pipe’s refusal to report to probation insulting to the justice system, and requested a 30-day sentence with a credit for time already served.

Acting duty council Hart Spencer asked that Pipe be credited for the 20 days already served. He added that, before the original charge, she had a job and was doing well.

“Once released, she hopes to abstain from drugs and alcohol, to reside in Bonnyville, and to keep working,” Spencer said.

Spencer noted that Pipe is working on a guardian order for her sons, and is only 21-years-old with one minor drug related offence.
