LAC LA BICHE - A woman from Lac La Biche County was recently commended by the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 1 for her community volunteer work.
Since retiring 15 years ago, Donna Fabbro has dedicated much of her time to volunteering with various community organizations, including as a member of the board of the Lac La Biche Mission Historical Society, the Ag Society, and the Lac La Biche Heritage Centre.
Recently, she was recognized for her volunteering work by the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 1 office in Lac La Biche.
“I started volunteering with the Métis Nation two years ago,” Fabbro told Lakeland This Week. “In that time, I have assisted with catering to events and helping with Indigenous ceremonies at Portage College and McArthur Place. Furthermore, I have baked Bannock for Indigenous Days celebrations.”
Fabbro, who is of Métis ancestry herself, said she not only enjoys lending a helping hand to the Métis Nation, but doing so allows her to strengthen her culture and heritage.
In August, upon arriving at Métis Crossing near Smoky Lake for a function, Fabbro was quite surprised to learn that she was about to be the recipient of a plaque honouring her volunteering efforts.
“There was a ceremony that took place in the evening and during the banquet, I was called up to not only receive my award, but to give a speech, one which I was totally unprepared for,” she explained with a smile. “Nonetheless, I said a few words, and thanked the Métis Nation for all the great work they’ve been doing. I felt honoured to be given such an award, it was quite an overwhelming experience.”
