Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials suspect the bear involved in the fatal attack on David Lertzman was a mature female grizzly, but so far the bruin has evaded all capture attempts.

An additional nine kilometres of wildlife exclusion fencing on the Trans-Canada Highway west of the Banff townsite has been fitted with an electric wire to discourage bears from climbing the fence and getting onto the deadly highway.

"What is the most concerning to us in Alberta – as it should be for everyone – is the dangerous precedent that a shutdown of a safely operating pipeline would set for future oil and gas infrastructure projects," said Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage.

On May 5, Edmonton-Strathcona NDP MP Heather McPherson, was granted an emergency debate in Parliament on the COVID-19 situation in Alberta. McPherson called on the federal government to take action on what she deemed a crisis situation.

"Alberta is facing an unprecedented public health crisis. My comments were wrong, as all Canadians want this global pandemic to end as soon as possible."
