As people seek to escape the heat, grizzly bear 122 did much the same thing, cooling off in Johnston Creek as the temperature soared into the 30s.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said 196 active wildfires are currently burning in B.C., with at least 40 sparked over the weekend.

Cliff Chapman, director of provincial operations for the B.C. Wildfire Service, says the recent wave of extreme heat has created conditions for a "significant spread" of wildfires, with the potential for 1,000 square kilometres to burn by the end of the weekend.

Canadian Pacific Railway says the cause of the derailment is under investigation.

A federal-provincial public inquiry into the April 2020 mass killing is expected to begin hearings in October.

The Lytton Creek wildfire that burned the village was still listed as out of control on Friday morning and was about 64 square kilometres in size.

"I think it's an unfortunate way for people to be expressing their opinions today. This is a day for happiness and celebration, a day for family so it's an unfortunate way for them to be expressing that," said Tyler Shandro.

“The vehicle strike was not reported to Parks Canada, and it is unknown how the wolf accessed the highway,” said Justin Brisbane, a spokesperson for Banff National Park.

Given the thin ice they began with, researchers concluded that about 80 per cent of the open water could be attributed to natural variation – the weather. The rest, though, was climate change.
