Possession of ammunition, possession of an illegal substance, and possession of identification that didn't belong to him landed one British Columbia man 60 days in custody.
On May 27, at about 8:15 a.m., local RCMP were called regarding an idling vehicle parked on the wrong side of the road on 46 St. in Bonnyville. Inside, the driver was believed to be intoxicated.
When officers arrived, they found Devon Ronald Cissell behind the wheel asleep with the driver's side door open. It took police several minutes before they were able to wake him up.
When Cissell got up to get out of the vehicle, officers found a small bag of methamphetamine on the seat. He was arrested for possession of an illegal substance and searched, which is when RCMP found shotgun shell ammunition and identification documents that didn't belong to Cissell.
At the time of his arrest, Cissell was under a weapons prohibition restricting him from possessing weapons or ammunition.
During his first court appearance on Tuesday, June 19, Cissell pled guilty to possession of an illegal substance. possession of prohibited ammunition, and possession of identification relating to another person.
Federal Crown prosecutor Vic Findlater described Cissell's criminal record as "rather unusual," containing mostly property-related offences.
"He appears to have an addiction," Findlater added.
The 28-year-old Chilliwack, B.C. male admitted he was struggling with an addiction to methamphetamine and heroin, and had relapsed after attending treatment.
"I just struggle constantly," Cissell said, adding he's just trying to pick up the pieces and move on.
Honourable Judge Lawrence Nimersky agreed with the joint submission of 60 days globally.
