Bonnyville drag race weekend attracts a crowd

BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville Gear Grabbers Car Club hosted a drag racing event on the weekend, July 23 and 24 at the Bonnyville Regional Airport. The weekend kicked off with a car show on Friday, July 22, attended by over 100 cars.

Among the racers was Robert Hollasch, who said the race weekend is a great event for the whole family.

“It’s nice to see the families and the kids going to the pit areas and seeing all the different race cars and street cars and meeting all the different people,” he said. “It’s a really big, nice community event and we are proud to be part of it.

Richard Butt and Darlene Montplaisir drove all the way from Calgary for the event, and to hang out with their family who lives in the area.

“We’ve been up here once before, two years ago, and it’s really improved a lot,” Butt said. “I hope they keep this event going (because) it’s definitely a great event.”

Another racer, Mauricio Solano, also praised the organizers for the “amazing” event.

“These guys always do a great job,” he said. “We come here every year (and) it’s one of the events we don’t miss and we’re having a great time,” said Solano.

Cayle Scherger with the Gear Grabbers said the weekend is meant for the community to enjoy. He also thanked the sponsors and the community because the event would not have happened without their support.

“The bleachers, the bouncy house, the barricades, the fence, the grass-cutting – everything you see here is based on sponsorship and funding, and the (Town and MD of Bonnyville),” he said. “It's great to see that we get continued support (because) in other communities it tends to fade off throughout the years, and we're going the other way. So, we're very fortunate for that.”

Scherger also encourages any car enthusiasts to join or get involved with the Gear Grabbers Car Club. He said the club is always open to the public.
