Bonnyville Lemonade stand raises money for SPCA

BONNYVILLE – Lemonade stands popped up all over the region for Lemonade Day, and in front of Home Hardware in Bonnyville, young entrepreneur and animal lover Cassius Grenier took the opportunity to fundraise for the Bonnyville SPCA.

When asked why he chose to fundraise for the SPCA, Cassius said, “I really like animals, and I want all the animals to have homes.”

Lemonade Day is a program that teaches kids about entrepreneurship and includes the opportunity to attend “Lemonade University” where participants learn the skills needed to run a successful lemonade stand.

Stands could be found all around Bonnyville – and beyond - on June 14.

According to the Lemonade Day website, “The foremost objective is to help today’s youth become the business leaders, social advocates, community volunteers and forward-thinking citizens of tomorrow.  We want to build self-esteem and new mindsets that can propel youth to success they likely would not have pursued otherwise.”

Cassius’ lemonade stand, Cass’s Lemonade, gave a portion of his proceeds to the SPCA. With the rest of the money, he is going to buy himself a Nintendo Switch game and snacks.

“I was going to send the animal shelter $40 or $50, but now since we got $200, we’re sending them $100,” said Cassius.

Cassius said he enjoyed tending to his stand with his parents Darcy and Zachary Grenier, especially when they all got to eat lunch and snacks together.

Lemonade University was a lot of fun for Cassius too, and he enjoyed hanging out with the other kids and eating pizza.

Cassius is a Grade 2 student at École Notre Dame Elementary. His family moved to the area about a year ago, so this was his first time participating in Lemonade Day, and he said he thinks it could be fun to do it again next year.

Lemonade Day is hosted through Community Futures Lakeland, and Darcy had wonderful things to say about how they treated the children in the program, and how much time and care they put into making it a great experience.
