BONNYVILLE – President of the Bonnyville Seniors Society, Sherry Hennessey, said they will be celebrating 50 years with a barbecue lunch on June 3 during Seniors' Week.
Seniors’ Week, which runs from June 2-8, will see a host of activities taking place in Bonnyville, including a pancake breakfast on June 2, free chair yoga classes at the Bonnyville Drop-in Centre, and a fun day at the Bonnyville Seniors Drop-in Centre on June 5.
“There’s going to be a lot to do for Seniors’ Week in the area. We also included on our events calendar that the Glendon Seniors Society is also having an event with Bingo and a fashion show. There is also free aquafit classes for seniors at the Bonnyville pool that the Town of Bonnyville is providing,” said Hennessey.
Hennessey spoke about both the recreational as well as social opportunities the Bonnyville Seniors Society facilitates. The Bonnyville Seniors Society’s mandate is to provide affordable recreation, education, and social and wellness programming for community members over the age of 50.
“We believe that an active senior is a healthy senior,” according to the organization.
Hennessey explained that some people might not be aware of what types of activities and events are offered at the Bonnyville Drop-in Centre, and the fun day during Seniors Week is open to all seniors to come and see what they have to offer and ask questions.
“We're just letting them try out all the different activities and things we have here, like our shuffleboard, bocce ball, horseshoes, crib, and Canasta. There will be door prizes too,” said Hennessey.
She reminds the community that although the Fun Day is specific to seniors, the celebration barbecue on June 3 and the pancake breakfast are community events, and everyone is welcome to come and celebrate with them.
Hennessey has been the president of the Bonnyville Seniors Society for over two years and was on the board for a year before that. She feels that it is important to support an active and interesting lifestyle for seniors in the community.
“It's a place for seniors to grow and socialize and stay healthy. It’s great to learn new things and share their talents, and that is what we do here."
