Bonnyville Singers give season end performance with a cinematic theme

The Bonnyville Singers choir hosted a season finale performance called ‘At the Movies – TV 2,’ where they sang songs from popular movies and TV shows.

BONNYVILLE – The Bonnyville Singers choir hosted a season finale performance called ‘At the Movies – TV 2,’ where they sang songs from popular movies and TV shows.

The popcorn was ready, and the red carpet was rolled out at St. John’s United Church on May 22, with cinema themed decorations and a roster of famous tunes from shows like Beetlejuice, Friends, and Pink Panther.

Tana Deibert has been enjoying her first year as the Director of the Bonnyville Singers, saying they are a great group to work with, and the season was full of fun.

“They did fabulous today. . . They sang with smiles, they watched me continuously, and we made a lot of entrances that we sometimes don't. And the crowd had fun which is absolutely why we do it,” said Deibert.

Bonnyville Singers member John Huffman acted as emcee for the event, and told the audience that Deibert has the “patience of a saint” and the “ears of a bat.”

Deibert explained that this performance marks one of the last of the season, before they go to visit Bonnylodge, Extendicare, and the hospital to sing for the patients and wrap up the season.

When asked how she had come to be the director of the Bonnyville Singers, she said the former director had been a substitute teacher in a class she was teaching, and after striking up a conversation about the choir, Deibert ended up joining three weeks before the spring concert, two years ago.

“They’ve been a great group to work with. They’re willing to put up with my crazy ideas and try different things out. We have tons of laughter too,” said Deibert.

She said one of her favoruite parts about the Bonnyville Singers is the socializing aspect.

“It’s the feeling of having another family – it's community. And at the same time, we’re creating music, which goes into a different depths of your soul,” said Deibert.

Auditions are not required to join the choir.

“It’s community based. So if you want to come try it in September, we meet at the Legion Hall on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. If you love singing, maybe you sing a lot in the shower but don’t like the idea of singing alone, then we’re the perfect group to come join.”

At the end of the performance, Bonnyville Singers president Paul Carlin took to the podium to thank Deibert and Amy Schaffrick, who accompanied the choir on the piano.
