It’s time to fuel your passion for reading this summer, at the Bonnyville Municipal Library.
The 2018 TD Summer Reading Club wants to ignite the love of reading in everyone involved through fun activities and good books.
Registration for the program started June 13 at the Bonnyville library, with 16 available spots per week up for grabs. The program runs 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Monday to Friday for seven weeks starting July and ending in early August. It’s free to anyone who registers.
Maddison Schumacher, program coordinator, said she has planned the club around different passions people can have, and hopes each child gets the chance to experience doing something they love.
“On a regular day, there will be a ‘book of the day’ that I pick,” explained Schumacher. “After we do the ‘book of the day,’ we will have an activity, a craft, and an active activity like a scavenger hunt or an obstacle course.”
Along with books that she hand selects, Schumacher also has a list of ones chosen by TD to help introduce members of the club to Canadian authors, illustrators, and stories.
If anyone can’t make it to one of the weeks the program is running, they can participate through the at home program with a reading log they can pick up at the registration booth. They can complete reading challenges from home, and once a task is complete, a parent initials the box to verify their child has finished the reading required.
After they’ve done their reading for the week, participants can claim a prize by Friday at noon.
Those attending the club are asked to bring their library card, reading game board, comfortable shoes suitable for indoor and outdoor activities, snacks, a water bottle, and any library books.
Ballots will be given out to members enrolled in both programs, and a draw for prizes will take place during the wrap-up event on Aug. 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Everyone participating in the Summer Reading Program and the points reading program are eligible for prizes at the event. The last day to enter ballots is Aug. 16 by 5 p.m.
