A vehicle outfitted with GPS led RCMP to their suspect.

On Aug. 4, 2017, Bonnyville RCMP were called about a break in at Carillion.

A 2017 Chevy Silverado with a yellow generator, a winch, and other items including a cellphone, was reported missing.

Police were notified that the vehicle had GPS tracking, and using the system, RCMP followed the path of the truck to a Bonnyville address.

According to the GPS, it remained there for several hours before leaving.

Officers located the vehicle, however, the items included in the description were missing.

A search of the original address where the truck stopped on 53 St. resulted in the arrest of several individuals, including 59-year-old Barry Kenneth Werstroh, who appeared in court to speak to the charges on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2019.

Inside of the residence, police found two stolen cellphones, the generator and winch from the truck, as well as clothing with the Carillion logo.

All of the items collectively were valued at over $5,000.

During his appearance in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, Westroh pled guilty to possession of stolen property over $5,000, and two counts failing to appear in court.

Crown prosecutor Jody Woligroski was seeking a global fine of $500.

She described his record as "quite dated."

Acting duty counsel David MacLeod said Werstroh changed his ways after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

"It really woke him up."

Werstroh noted, "I feel very remorseful... I've found the Lord."

Rather than impose a fine, Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams sentenced him to one-day time served.

Werstroh was released from the Edmonton Remand Centre later that day.
