BONNYVILLE – Adventure is on its way to Kinosoo Ridge, after the MD of Bonnyville selected Canmore-based company Rigging Specialties to design and build the adventure park.

MD council awarded the $1.5-million contract for the design and build of the structure during their Aug. 12 meeting.

With an ambitious goal of having the aerial park open by the May long weekend 2021, the municipality only received three complete proposals as other companies didn’t believe they would be able to adhere to the timeline.

The fact that Rigging Specialities would be doing the entire project start to finish was a bonus for Coun. Dana Swigart.

“I like that the company is going to do the end-to-end design, build, everything; and not have to worry about other contractors coming in for foundations,” he noted.

The design proposed by Rigging Specialties is called a hexagonal structure, which has seven posts that have interconnected lines throughout the levels. It includes the ability to add a number of themed elements throughout, which was a priority for council to highlight the municipality in the park. The rough drawing also included a zip line that would go down to the lodge at Kinosoo Ridge.

Rigging Specialities has extensive history building similar structures, both in North America and internationally.

The adventure park would have a capacity of 70 people at one time and would only require around three staff members. Children as young as three can enjoy the structure and an accessible area ensures anyone can participate.

It will feature 36 obstacles, a viewing platform, and wheelchair and kids courses. The design also allows the MD to easily expand the park in the future.

The proposal hit all of the priorities for councillors, who wanted to provide a view of the lake and surrounding area and ensure the park was accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

According to Caroline Palmer, general manager of planning and development, the MD is still waiting to hear back from the province regarding their Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) grant application.

“We’re still waiting for it to be confirmed but we’re a solid contender at this point of receiving it.”

Council decided in February to move forward with building the park, instead of waiting to hear if they'll receive the $800,000 in grant funding first.
