St. Paul RCMP came across a woman flagging down vehicles asking for help.
On Aug. 26, RCMP found a female trying to get the attention of passersby. The officer pulled over and the woman informed them she had been assaulted by her boyfriend.
There was a bump on her cheek, which appeared to be bruising.
According to the victim, an argument had broken out at her boyfriend, Jay Tyler Cardinal's, residence in Saddle Lake. He hit her and threatened to kill her.
During Cardinal's court appearance on Tuesday, the 27-year-old Saddle Lake First Nations male pleaded guilty to breaching the conditions of a probation order, assault, and threats to cause death.
Crown prosecutor Renato Di Lorenzo told the court they felt a one-year unsupervised probation order with conditions would suffice as a fit and proper sentence, in addition to eight days in jail and a $250 fine.
Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams disagreed with the joint submission presented by council, and instead sentenced Cardinal to eight days in jail, a $250 fine, and a one-year supervised probation order with conditions to keep the peace, be of good behaviour, attend treatment and counselling as recommended by probation specifically in relation to anger management and domestic violence, and have no contact with the victim.
"I just want to move on with my life and look on to better days," Cardinal said.
Cardinal was released for time-served.
