“A jail sentence is clearly warranted.”
Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams sentenced the man responsible for stealing $40 worth of gas in a stolen vehicle to 90 days behind bars.
Jonathan V. Fryingpan, 25, pled guilty to theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
On Tuesday, Feb. 19, Fryingpan appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse from the Saskatoon Correctional Centre via CCTV.
According to Crown prosecutor Tyler MacLean, on March 18, 2018, Bonnyville RCMP received a complaint from the local Fas Gas that a male had stolen $40 of fuel.
Photos from the video footage of the suspect were distributed to surrounding RCMP detachments and media, in hopes of identifying the male.
Their investigation lead to police to Fryingpan, who was later arrested.
MacLean said the vehicle that he had been filling with fuel had been reported stolen the night before the incident.
Williams agreed to the joint submission, and stated “I think you’re getting a very, very good offer.”
His jail time will run concurrent with any other ongoing sentence.
