A local car club is one step closer to hosting the area’s first drag race, and they’re sharing what they have so far with the community.
The Bonnyville Gear Grabbers are hosting an information session starting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the Bonnyville Neighbourhood Inn.
“It’s an opportunity for anybody that’s interested in drag racing, in volunteering, or just in hearing what’s going on in detail,” detailed Shon Gamache, club director, adding attendees will have the chance to meet with other car and racing enthusiasts, and learn more about becoming a member.
Trent Law, one of the organizers for the drag racing event, noted it’s important for Gear Grabbers to get feedback from surrounding communities.
“Bonnyville is very good at hosting excellent events, and we want to make sure that it’s a great experience for all involved,” he explained.
Stations will inform attendees about the drag race itself, as well as Gear Grabbers. A question period will allow the public to find out all of the details.
Since announcing drag racing was coming to the area, Gamache stated there’s been a lot of excitement from residents.
“There’s so many different ways and methods that you can run a drag race event in terms of classes, what’s allowed to race, what passes tech, and stuff like that... This will be a great opportunity for anybody who has those questions or are curious, to come to this public information session and hear all the details in regards to where we’re at right now,” detailed Gamache.
Gear Grabbers has taken a lot of time pulling the event together.
“We have spent months in preparation and going through the steps... It’s just a process, and we’ve got some really key people involved. It’s all about executing the (plan), and I think we’re doing a great job,” expressed Law.
While tentative dates have been discussed, they’ll be selected ahead of the information session.
“We’re working really hard to make sure we don’t conflict with any other local events that are in the area, and also working to make sure we don’t conflict with any other drag racing events in Alberta that are airport-based. There’s quite a few of them. We also want to attract those racers too,” detailed Gamache.
Registration dates will be released later this year.
Gamache noted they may have to limit the number of participating cars to ensure the event runs smoothly.
“As we get closer, we’ll cross that bridge, because we can only cram so much into a one-day event without it being rushed. We want it to run smoothly and effectively, to make sure all the participants have fun. At the end of the day, that’s the most important (thing), and a show for the crowd.”
Law added, “We want to put on an excellent event and make it a nice family day. We’ll just have to hope the weather works for us.”
