Some big names will be hitting the ice this December to participate in Operation Hockey Heroes.
Hayley Wickenheiser, hockey alumni, military, first responders, and youth will be facing off in a celebrity charity hockey game the community won't soon forget.
On Saturday, Dec. 15, the 4 Wing Medley Family Resource Centre (MFRC) will be hosting Operation Hockey Heroes, a fundraiser for the Poppy Campaign and their own programming.
According to executive director Floyd Perras, there will be some big names taking to the ice for the cause.
“Hayley Wickenheiser is about to become the Honourary Col. for the 401 Squadron, right at the 100 year anniversary of serving the Canadian nation,” he expressed, adding she will be bringing some friends along.
Wickenheiser was the first female hockey player to play the sport full-time in a position other than goalie.
Although they haven't confirmed who at this point, Perras said there is a possibility some NHL alumni will also be lacing up their skates.
“We’re very excited about what that will look like," he expressed.
Skating alongside some memorable faces will be military, first responders, and youth.
During his presentation to the City of Cold Lake on Tuesday, Oct. 23, Perras explained their request for a reduction in the cost of the ice and lounge rental.
The event itself is free for fans to attend, all they ask is for a non-perishable food item for the Cold Lake Food Bank.
“Net proceeds (from the event) will go to the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund and the MFRC,” Perras explained.
Ninety per cent of the funds raised will be going towards the Poppy Fund, while the remaining 10 per cent is donated to the MFRC programming. These monies are raised through sponsorship of the event.
The game will also be celebrating the 401 Squadron's 100 year anniversary, raise awareness for 4 Wing, and bring local families together for a cause.
The day of the event will start off at 7 a.m. with a fundraising breakfast, followed by a hockey game at 10:15 a.m., and post-game autograph opportunities.
“We’re working with several partners to achieve this memorable event. We think this would be a significant highlight for Cold Lake, for 4 Wing, for the MFRC, the tactical fighter squadron, minor hockey, and the Honorary Colonels,” expressed Perras.
The topic will be brought back before council for discussion and a decision on their support.
