Helping hands prepare community garden for next spring

On a crisp fall day, community members lent a hand to pull in the final crops and prepare the Bonnyville Community Garden for next spring.

BONNYVILLE - On a crisp fall day, community members lent a hand to pull in the final crops and prepare the Bonnyville Community Garden for next spring.

The community garden is operated by the Lakeland Industry and Community Association (LICA), and gives area residents an opportunity to plant their own garden beds or contribute to community garden beds.

After a successful growing season, LICA organized a Fall Garden Cleanup Day that was held on Sept. 25

"We had the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontiacs and six community members come out and join our three staff," said Kristina Morris, the executive director of LICA.

Volunteers helped with cleaning out the beds, weeding and collecting the final harvest of the season.

"We were able to fully prepare all of our community beds for planting in the spring and planted the remaining fruit trees that we had in stock," Morris said.

The Fall Garden Cleanup was also another way to help boost awareness and to encourage more people to sign up for a plot next year. It costs an initial $10 to become a garden member and then it is $10 to rent a plot.

Plot reservations are open at any time of the year and can be booked by calling the LICA office at (780) 812-2182.
