After John Irwin announced earlier this month he would not be running for mayor in this fall's municipal election, incumbent mayor Ernie Isley sparked an added interest in the race last week as he backtracked on his plans to retire and stated his intent to run for a third term as mayor of Bonnyville.

With Irwin having pulled out of the race Aug. 8, that left current councillor Gene Sobolewski as the only name on the ballot.

With a one-man mayoral race looking like a possibility and in light of Alberta Health Service's attempt to eliminate the pathology positions at the Bonnyville Health Centre, Isley said he was again considering running for mayor.

“In view of changing circumstances, as far as people deciding to run or not and in view of recent problems developing with the northeastern regional (pathology) lab, the old man is starting to reconsider his original decision to retire,” Isley said last week.

Isley will be in Louisiana for the next two weeks but said he would be returning Sep. 2, at which point he will make an official public announcement confirming whether or not he will be re-entering the mayoral race.
