Jody Centazzo can sum up Duclos School in one word: home.

For 18 years, she has worked within the same four walls, and every day she has grown to love it more.

Now, she will continue to walk the familiar halls of Duclos School, but in her new role as principal.

“I have been at this school for about 18 years now, and I stayed because this school values relationships with kids and connecting with them. That’s really important to me,” Centazzo said. “The staff values that as much as I do. I have enjoyed working here, and the opportunity of becoming principal just means I will be able to continue to do those things.”

Starting as a Grade 4 teacher with Northern Lights Public Schools in 1996, Centazzo switched gears in her career, taking on the role of the Student Support Team coordinator and Life Schools teacher. She also taught Grades 1 and 3.

In 2010, Centazzo became assistant principal, and feels her experience with the school, staff, students, and parents, will be an asset to the next chapter in her journey.

“I think knowing the community, families, and students really well, will allow me to continue that great work without having to start over again. We’re doing a lot of greta things, so I can just pick up and keep on with those and build on them,” Centazzo expressed.

She added, “One of the things that I bring is my knowledge of what quality teaching and learning looks like. It’s important to develop a strong culture of learning and caring.”

Centazzo plans to continue to build off of Duclos’ success, while keeping the focus on literacy and numeracy.

Growing up in Bonnyville, Centazzo has deep roots in the community, and has always felt a pull towards education.

“I got into education because of my love for kids, and because my mom was in education for probably 30 years. She always came home and inspired me with her great stories. I couldn’t wait to be a part of that,” described Centazzo.

Superintendent Rick Cusson described Centazzo in a release  as someone who is “focused on student success and fostering an environment that encourages collaboration, mentorship, and modeling.”

Like always, Centazzo said she is enthusiastic about the opportunity to continue to learn more about the community as she takes on her new role at Duclos.

“I’m really honoured and proud to be the principal at Duclos School. I look forward to getting to know the community better and building those partnerships. I’m looking forward to the same thing I’m always looking forward to, and that’s connecting with the kids and staff.”
