Nov. 1 marked the kick-off of Movember, a month dedicated to raising awareness and funds for men's health.

While men raise money growing out their moustaches, their female counterparts, "mosisters", show their support by fundraising through other means.

This year, local groups and businesses are coming together for the cause.

For the first time as a team, this season the Bonnyville Jr. A Pontaics will be growing out their 'staches.

Assistant coach TJ Millar and goaltender Colby Muise discussed the possibility of fundraising as a team, wanting to build on their previous years of taking part as individuals.

"I know a bunch of guys have been participating in Movember fundraisers for years. I know I've been doing it since I was 17-years-old, and Colby Muise and I had a conversation a few days before November came around... We got together with a couple of the other guys, and we decided what better way to raise awareness than to do it collectively (as a team)," Millar expressed.

Muise views the fundraiser as a way to experiment with his facial hair while raising awareness and money for a worthy cause.

"I just thought it was a good opportunity to get the community of Bonnyville and the Pontiacs involved in men's health and a good fundraiser," he emphasized.

For team members involved, their faces were clean-shaven when Nov. 1 hit.

"We said 'no cheating allowed,'" Millar exclaimed.

Fans may notice players such as Bobby Young, Ty Enns, Isaac Saniga, Grayson Constable, Brenden Morrow, and Ethan Leyer sporting a new look.

"Not everybody can grow the best moustache, but there's a few guys... It's just something that I wanted to start, and the guys joined along after," Muise noted.

With a number of home games in the coming weeks, Millar hopes to get some donation boxes for fans interested in contributing "to make sure people can come out, support the team, and a good cause."

Also joining the cause are staff members at Crew Haus Barbers and Stylists in Cold Lake.

Owner Linda Folkard said the shop has been taking part in Movember since she took over ownership in 2016, and have raised over $750 since.

Residents can purchase ballots for a draw for a free shave or macial, Folkard's play-on-words for a facial for men, with all of the proceeds being donated to the Movember group. People who donate get to write their name on a moustache, which gets placed on a wall in the shop.

"We did (the draw) last year, just for the shave, and it proved to be very successful," noted Folkard, adding while the fundraiser originally started to raise money for prostate cancer research, Crew Haus got involved because of the expansion into the importance of men's mental health.

"There's a lot of guys that I know that are suffering with mental health issues, and they shouldn't be ashamed to look into getting help for that," she expressed.

Folkard noted men going to get yearly check-ups is also an important message. She lost her father to lung cancer who avoided the doctor until it was too late.

"Guys have to realize they aren't invincible, and they need to take care of themselves. There's no shame in just going to the doctor to make sure they're okay," she exclaimed.

Folkard considers herself and her employees, mosisters, because "we can't grow moustaches, and if we could we wouldn't want to," but said it's still an important cause they want to support.

Anyone interested in donating to either the Crew Haus or Pontiacs can can visist their Movember fundraising page online.
