Understanding Canada’s criminal justice system can be complicated.

A man involved in the armed robbery of the 1 AM Liquor Store in Bonnyville will await his sentence following a Gladue Report.

On Tuesday, April 3, Tyre Darren Youngchief pled guilty for his involvement in a robbery that left a store clerk shot in the stomach.

Youngchief appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse from the Edmonton Remand Centre via CCTV, and pled guilty to robbery, two counts of failing to appear in court, failing to comply with an undertaking, and obstructing a peace officer after two incidents last year.

On Aug. 7, 2017, Bonnyville RCMP were called to the 1 AM Liquor Store. When officers attended they found the store clerk, who had been shot in the stomach, being assisted by EMS.

After reviewing surveillance footage, police had a timeline of what occurred around 12:04 a.m. that day.
The video showed Youngchief and two other individuals entering the liquor store.

While one suspect remained at the front counter revealing a gun to the clerk, Youngchief and a youth offender proceeded to the back of the store, where they began stealing liquor.

When the suspect wielding the gun fired a shot in the air, Youngchief and the youth took that as their cue to leave, and departed the store.

Inside, the man continued to interact with the store clerk, and a shot was fired, hitting the clerk in the stomach.

Youngchief was later arrested for his involvement.

A few months later, on Nov. 26, 2017, Youngchief was charged with obstructing a peace officer after lying about his identity.

His matters were adjourned until June 5 in order for the preparation of a Gladue Report.
