Kaitlyn G. Gilbertson isn't confident that without a court order she will attend drug treatment.
That was why she requested Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams to include a condition in her nine-month conditional discharge requiring her to check into a 28-day residential treatment centre.
Gilbertson had pleaded guilty to failing to comply with an undertaking and possession of methamphetamine in June, adjourning her matters to October for the completion of a pre-sentence report. On Tuesday she was before the court for sentencing.
During a December 2018 traffic stop, RCMP located a drug kit, which contained a needle with four-grams of methamphetamine in it, in Gilbertson's vehicle.
Gilbertson is addicted to methamphetamine. She explained to the court how without being court mandated to attend treatment, she's not sure she will.
"It's not that I'm unwilling... I want to, it's fear of certain aspects of what (treatment) requires," detailed Gilbertson.
She used relocating to Calgary as an example.
"That's scary. There's a lot of things I'm trying to work past, the only way to do that is to just do it."
The 25-year-old was sentenced by Williams to serve a nine-month conditional discharge with conditions to attend residential drug treatment, keep the peace, be of good behaviour, and attend any treatment of counselling as recommended by probation.
All items seized during the search of the vehicle were forfeited to the Crown for destruction.
