Cassandra Cora Janvier's addiction to methamphetamine is what has led her down the wrong path, she claims.
On Tuesday, Janvier appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse to speak to charges that stem out of Cold Lake.
Appearing via CCTV from the Pine Grove Correctional Facility, Janvier pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, failing to attend court, and assault.
The 29-year-old Cold Lake First Nations woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail, one-year probation, and a $50 fine.
Cold Lake RCMP responded to a complaint about suspicious people attempting to get a truck, which appeared to be stuck, out of a field on May 3. Officers located the vehicle and three suspects. One male fled the scene while a second approached police.
Janvier remained close to the truck and grabbed an open backpack containing a firearm.
She was arrested and police confirmed the weapon inside of the bag was a bolt-action rifle with a sawed-off barrel. Also found inside was a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine.
Ten days later, Cold Lake RCMP received another call relating to Janvier. According to the complainant, Janvier had attended her residence and after an argument ensued, was asked to leave. Before departing, Janvier punched the woman in the face.
The sentence of a $50 fine in relation to Janvier failing to appear in court on June 4, 30 days in jail for possessing the meth pipe and firearm, and a 12-month probation order as a result of the assault, was a joint submission between the Crown prosecutor and defence counsel.
Janvier has conditions to keep the peace, be of good behaviour, have no contact with the victim of the assault, and not to attend the victim's residence.
Acting as Janvier's defence counsel, Stephanie Oleksyn explained how her client has been diagnosed with FASD and has supports in the community through the Lakeland Centre for FASD.
Oleksyn noted prior to these offences, it had been quite some time since Janvier had been before the courts because she had managed to stay out of trouble "until relatively recently."
