Theft of a motor vehicle, use of a firearm when prohibited, disguised, break and enter to commit an offence, and arson were some of the charges MacKenzie Evan Giant pled guilty to on Tuesday.
Giant adjourned his sentencing for the completion of a Gladue Report after appearing in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, March 19, when he pled guilty to theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of using a firearm when prohibited, two counts of disguised, arson, and two counts breaking and entering to commit an offence.
On Dec. 7, 2018, RCMP were called after a vehicle was stolen out of Smokey Lake. It was discovered two days later west of Saddle Lake completely burned.
In fact, St. Paul chief Crown prosecutor Jordan Kerr said, it was still smouldering when police arrived.
When Giant was arrested, he admitted to police that he stole the vehicle and burned it before someone picked him up.
The following day, on Dec. 8, Bonnyville RCMP were called after the La Corey convenience store was broken into. When officers arrived, they found the doors had been smashed in.
Video footage showed a vehicle that matched the description of the one reported stolen on Dec. 7, ripping the doors off of the store before four suspects entered and dragged an ATM out.
In the video, Giant is carrying a shotgun.
The next day, Goodfish RCMP were called after a break and enter at a store within their jurisdiction.
According to Kerr, the incident happened very similarly to the one in La Corey - the doors were ripped off, three suspects entered, and the ATM was taken.
On Dec. 10, 2018, RCMP located a stolen vehicle at a Saddle Lake residence. Giant was arrested with multiple other suspects.
Police located an ATM and the masks believed to have been used in the incident. Giant led RCMP to a second ATM on the property.
During his statement, the accused admitted to his involvement.
Giant adjourned his matters for the completion of a Gladue Report. He will return for sentencing on May 8 in the St. Paul Provincial Courthouse.
