Police discover loaded firearm and drugs in search

Three suspects were arrested after police found a loaded sawed-off shotgun and methamphetamine during a routine traffic stop.

On Feb. 20, RCMP were conducting patrols when they pulled over a 28-year-old Bonnyville male and his two female passengers.

The driver had a suspended driver's license, and was arrested as a result.

During a search of the vehicle, police located drugs, drug paraphernalia, and a loaded sawed-off shotgun.

The 36-year-old Ardmore and 23-year-old Bonnyville passengers were also arrested and charged in relation to the incident.

The driver was charged with possession of a restricted/prohibited weapon without a license, possession of firearm in a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possession of crystal meth, and one count of driving while suspended.

Aside from the latter, the two passengers in the vehicle also face the same charges.

“They were all released in bail hearings to appear in court,” stated Bonnyville RCMP Sgt. Sarah Parke.

On Feb. 23, a 45-year-old male was charged for raffling an item on social media without a license under the gaming and liquor act.

“He was posting on Facebook that he was raffling off an item and people could buy a ticket for the same price and they would be drawing for the item,” explaiend Parke.

The Bonnyville man will appear in court for sentencing.

The local RCMP detachment has been kept busy with break-ins both in town and the MD.

Overnight on Feb. 19, a business on 52 Ave. in Bonnyville was broken into. Extensive damage was done to the chain gate, and the suspect attempted to steal a truck, however was unsuccessful.

On Feb. 20, an oil site on Hwy. 659 near Range Road 452 had $13,000 worth of tools stolen. Police are still investigating.

On the night of Feb. 18, a business on Range Road 461 had several of their vehicles broken into overnight. License plates were reported stolen.
