Over the course of a few days, Bonnyville RCMP well called to aide EMS and hospital staff with Ernie Joseph Powder on more than one occasion.
Powder has 21 days left to serve after pleading guilty to mischief and two counts of failing to comply with conditions during his appearance in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse on Tuesday, March 5.
On Feb. 23, EMS contacted local RCMP about an aggressive patient.
It was around 8:30 p.m. when officers responded and located Powder yelling at two EMS workers at the Bonnyville hospital.
According to St. Paul's chief Crown prosecutor Jordan Kerr, Powder was intoxicated, likely by hand sanitizer, at the time.
Although he can't recall the incident, Powder admits he was belligerent and rude with police and EMS.
After being released on a recognizance, RCMP were called once again by EMS, this time regarding an unresponsive male.
Police determined Powder was heavily intoxicated on Feb. 25, and in breach of his conditions.
Three days later, the Bonnyville hospital contacted RCMP notifying them that Powder was being disruptive, stealing hand sanitizer and drinking it.
When police arrived, Powder was intoxicated and once again breaching the conditions of his release.
Powder has a "lengthy criminal record," Kerr explained.
The 41-year-old suffers from health issues because of his drinking problem.
"Drinking hand sanitizer is going to kill you one of these days," said Honourable Judge Ivan Ladouceur, who agreed to the joint submission of 30 days in custody.
As of his sentencing, Powder had 21 days to serve.
