BONNYVILLE – It’s going to be very hot this week, and Bonnyville RCMP are reminding people never to leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a few minutes, since cars heat up fast and can put lives at serious risk.

This week, the Lakeland region will see temperature highs between 30-32 degrees Celsius during the day. Overnight low temperatures of around 11-13 degrees Celsius will provide some relief at night, according to an Aug. 25 special weather statement from Environment Canada.

According to Environment Canada, the heat wave could last throughout the week and will affect communities in central and northern Alberta, including the entirety of the Lakeland region.

"Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to the morning or evening, when temperatures will be cooler. Extreme heat can affect everyone's health," reads the special weather statement.

Safety reminders

Bonnyville RCMP are reminding the public that parked vehicles can get dangerously hot within minutes, so leaving children or pets for any period of time is inadvisable. "There is no safe 'short stop.' Take them with you whenever you exit the vehicle," warns the RCMP.

Keeping windows slightly open will not prevent cars from overheating.

RCMP also asks the public to immediately call 911 if they see a child or an animal left inside a vehicle in extreme heat.

Water practices

As many residents take advantage of the last days of summer, local RCMP members are also stressing water safety.

Life jackets should always be worn on boats, children and inexperienced swimmers need constant supervision, and alcohol or drugs should be avoided near water. Rules at lakes, beaches, and pools must be followed.

"While enjoying this late blast of summer weather, Bonnyville residents are encouraged to keep these tips in mind to stay safe during this long-duration heat event," said S/Sgt. Sarah Parke, detachment commander at the Bonnyville RCMP, on Monday.
