Some homes and businesses in Bonnyville were evacuated in the morning of May 27 after a "hazardous material spill" occurred, according to information from the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA).

"Earlier today, a hazardous material spill occurred at a business in the 4500 block of 68 Street," reads information from the BRFA. "The spill has been contained, and cleanup procedures are currently underway and expected to continue throughout the day."

As a precaution, nearby homes and businesses were evacuated. Authorities are monitoring the situation, "and should any further evacuations be necessary, the public will be notified immediately," according to the BRFA.

"We thank the public for their cooperation and urge everyone to avoid the area while response efforts continue."

The Town of Bonnyville also posted a notice on Tuesday morning on social media regarding the hazardous spill.
