St. John's United Church brings tropical paradise to Bonnyville

BONNYVILLE – Hundreds of Bonnyville residents were transported to the tropical paradise of Hawaii on Feb. 25, as they gathered to support St. John's United Church at a Hawaiian Luau fundraising event held the Beaver River Fish and Game Hall.

Arriving in "tropical comfort" attire, families and friends enjoyed a performance by local band, Buckhorn Steel, a pig roast, and showed off their flexibility during a game of limbo.

The luau dine and dance was initially organized to raise money to upgrade a sound system and to purchase a new screen for the church's sanctuary.

While the total amount raised was not available by press deadline, special consideration to where funds will be directed may change, says Jacki Kunec, one of the event's organizers.

"Unfortunately, our church organ now needs repairs and we are not sure if the technician can fix it," Kunec explains.

Regardless of where the funds are directed, "Our event was a huge success and we surpassed our goal thanks to a very supportive and generous group of patrons."
