Station 5 Bonnyville sees full house for Fire Prevention Week

Oct. 8-14 marks Fire Prevention Week. To encourage community awareness, the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority once again held its annual open house and elementary school visits.

BONNYVILLE - Each year, the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) marks Fire Prevention Week with several community engagement events and educational demonstrations.

Volunteer firefighters took part in educational school visits at Duclos School, École des Beaux-Lacs and École Notre Dame Elementary on Oct. 10.

Later that day, Station 5 Bonnyville opened its doors to the public for its annual open house and community barbecue.

As always, the fire department had special educational demonstrations for attendees. In line with this year's Fire Prevention Week theme "Cooking safety starts with you," Fire Prevention Officer Dwayne Ethier demonstrated how to respond to stove top fire involving cooking oil and the unintended consequences of trying to use water to extinguish the flames.

The crowd also had the opportunity to observe what happens when a passenger has their feet on a dashboard and the airbag is deployed during a collision.
