The Town of Bonnyville held their regular council meeting on Tuesday, July 11.

It was during this meeting that council made the decision to approve a request from the town's naming committee to have two men formally recognized for their contributions to Bonnyville.

The west end ball diamonds will be renamed the Paul Bougie Memorial Ballpark, after the former town councillor.

Brian Ross, a long-time board member of the local Affordable Housing Association, will have a the affordable housing unit renamed in his honour. It will be called the Wayne Manor, after Ross' late brother Wayne, who was one of the first tenants of the facility and an avid Batman fan.

The Town of Bonnyville approved Stephen Caldwell's application for a subdivision to be used for residential purposes.

The lot on the corner of 66 St. And 47 Ave., also known as the site of the old Duclos hospital, will be split into three separate parcels.

Servicing for the lot will be taken care of by the town, and paid back by the property owner through a local improvement tax.

After a disappointing display of fireworks on Canada Day, council is making the decision to go all out for next year's festivities.

"We have a really good reputation for Canada Day, we get a lot of attendance. That's the reason we go fairly big with the fireworks display, and this year they were a bit of a disappointment," said Mayor Gene Sobolewski.

The town will add fireworks left over from this year's show to the celebrations July 1, 2018, in the hopes of putting on a grand display the whole region can enjoy.

"We'll be the only ones going this all out for Canada 151," Sobolewski laughed.
