Two people were killed following a devastating head-on collision on Highway 28, 14 kilometres west of Bonnyville the morning of April 20.

Staff Sgt. Luis Gandolfi of the Bonnyville RCMP said the driver of a yellow Camaro crossed the centre line while travelling westbound on Highway 28 near the intersection of Highway 41 when it struck a pickup truck carrying four people.

The driver of the Camaro and driver of the pickup truck were killed as a result of injuries sustained in the collision, he said.

All three passengers in the truck were rushed to hospital with injuries, none of which were life threatening, Gandolfi said.

The jaws of life had to be used to extricate injured passengers in the pickup truck and get them to hospital. Both vehicles ended up in a ditch adjacent to Highway 28 as a result of the crash.

"Officers from our collision analyst section were on the scene to try and determine exactly what happened," said Gandolfi. "This was a very serious collision where both drivers were unfortunately killed."

The bodies of both deceased were released to a provincial medical examiner to determine if any medical condition may have played a role in the accident, he said.

After the initial investigation, police do not believe alcohol, drugs or excessive speed played any role in this tragedy, said Gandolfi.

Besides RCMP officers, members of the Bonnyville Fire Department and Bonnyville EMS also attended the scene.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone with information relating to this event are being asked to contact the Bonnyville RCMP at 780-826-3350.

The names of the deceased have not been released by police pending notification of family members.
