The two men killed in the house fire that broke out early yesterday morning have been identified as John Kenneth Bokhout and Blake Kenneth Hesselwood, both 22 years old and from Blyth, Ontario.

According to RCMP, the cause of the fire has been determined to be “consistent with smoking related materials.”

The third occupant of the house, also a male in his early 20s, has not been identified, but according to Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority (BRFA) chief Brian McEvoy, he has been released from hospital and will be returning to Ontario with his family later today.

In an earlier statement, McEvoy said, firefighters from Bonnyville, Fort Kent, and Ardmore responded to a 911 call at 2:03 a.m. on Nov 15. When they arrived at the house, approximately 2.5 kilometres east of Bonnyville, it was completely engulfed in flames and one occupant was on the roof of the addition to the house, attempting to help another occupant out a window.

Firefighters rescued both men and another from the first floor, and all three were transported to hospital, where two were pronounced dead.

McEvoy also stated a smoke detector was found inside the building, near the bedrooms, but did not have a battery.
