Understanding Canada’s criminal justice system can be complicated.

Two Bonnyville hotels became the temporary home of James Dean Yukim.

The known to be transient man was sentenced to 120 days in custody for breaking and entering into two local hotels.

On Tuesday, April 3, Yukim plead guilty to two counts of break and enter and one count of failing to attend court.

On Dec. 8, 2017, the Southview Motel called RCMP after the motel manager witnessed Yukim and another individual exiting one of their rooms.

The two individuals had not received permission from the motel to stay in the room, and when officers attended, they had fled through an open window. Police located the suspects walking down the street sometime after.

A few months later, on March 17, the local RCMP received a call from the Bonnyville Hotel. According to the caller, someone had broken into one of the rooms, after noticing the window and door lock were both damaged.

Yukim was later arrested in relation to this incident.

Honourable Judge Kathleen Williams agreed with the joint-submission of 120 days in custody.

Yukim will serve 60 days for each count of breaking and entering, and one day for failing to attend court.

Crown prosecutor Jeff Rudiak said Yukim is known to have issues with drugs, and is described as a “transient” individual who travels from place to place.

“I’m sorry for what I did. It won’t happen again,” Yukim said.

As of his sentencing, the 51-year-old Bonnyville man had spent 30 enhanced days in custody, with 90 left to serve.

He appeared in the Bonnyville Provincial Courthouse to plea via CCTV.
